THE CROWN

According to Wikipedia, “A place of worship is a specially designed structure or space where individuals or a group of people such as a congregation come to perform acts of devotion, veneration, or religious study. A building constructed or used for this purpose is sometimes called a house of worship”.

For the PREDIOS Group it’s aways a wonderful opportunity to design a place of veneration and worship. This one is called the Crown !

The ‘Crown’ is the christened design-name given to the proposed new church headquarters building for the Embassy of Life Chapel. The building, to be located in Daban, Kumasi, takes its form’s inspiration from a crown, symbolizing the headship of Christ as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords in the church.

This same architectural form is also a call to worship seen as hands raised ready to receive from the Lord. The cross, emblematic of the Christian faith, strategically stands tall and proud on the upper right of the front elevation and entrance, as a reminder of the sacrifice of Christ and a bold identification of the building as a Christian haven and a place of Worship. The entrance, designed like a mouth with a protruding ramp welcomes all to the house of the Lord.

Serving the important purpose of facilitating spirituality, the Crown deals with the other key functions using architecture as a vehicle to address psychological, social, and physical issues.

The result is an elevated and indented limestone ‘Crown’ seated on a fair-faced concrete base with its pristine alabaster ‘neck’ exposed, emphasizes the elegance of the chapel’s inclined form. Here, the interplay of tranparency at the ground floor level and opacity at the upper floors gives a sense of the Crown in a state of eternal suspension. The limestone shell wraps around the recessed base and is carefully punctured in places to allow for the strategic ingress of light into the chapels volume.
